Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) secured a thrilling four-run victory over the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Saturday night at the Eden Gardens, thanks in large part to a phenomenal performance by veteran all-rounder Andre Russell in IPL 2024.
Russell, known for his explosive batting, lived up to his reputation with a blistering knock of 64 runs off just 25 balls. His innings, studded with seven sixes and three fours, propelled KKR to a competitive total of 208/7 after they found themselves at a precarious 119/6 in the 18th over.
But Andre Russell’s contribution wasn’t limited to the bat. With his right-arm pace, he chipped in with two crucial wickets, showcasing his all-around abilities. The victory, however, wasn’t without its drama. Heinrich Klaasen of SRH almost snatched the game away with a belligerent 63-run knock, but KKR held their nerve to secure a narrow win.
Speaking after the match, Russell acknowledged the unwavering support he has received from KKR over the years. “This franchise means a lot to me,” he said. “They’ve shown faith and confidence in me. What I did tonight is just to say keep supporting.”

This statement came after some questioned the decision to retain Andre Russell following his relatively subdued performance in IPL 2023. His knock on Saturday served as a powerful response, silencing his critics.
Russell also revealed his batting approach, emphasizing adaptability over premeditation. “I just try to react to whatever comes my way,” he explained. “Over the last two years, bowlers have been well prepared against me. I have been working on finding runs even when they have plans for me.”
The all-rounder reminisced about his journey with KKR, which began in 2014. “At the start, I was on the bench,” he said. “But I kept proving myself, and now I’m a permanent fixture. I’m just happy to keep contributing.”
Andre Russell also lauded young fast bowler Harshit Rana for his composure under pressure. Rana, entrusted with defending 13 runs in the final over against a dangerous Klaasen, held his nerve and secured the victory for KKR.
“His (Rana’s) body language was fantastic in the last over,” said Russell. “He wanted the ball, which shows a lot about his character. He claimed the last over and delivered for us.”
With this win, KKR have gotten their IPL 2024 campaign off to a winning start. Fans will be eager to see if Russell can continue his dominant form and propel his team towards further success.
